Explore the UNESCO site of Nora, an ancient city along Sardinia’s coast. Roman and Phoenician ruins are revealed, including a well-preserved theater and the Carthaginian warehouses.
Drive along the south-west coast of Sardinia to Nora, on the same road traditionally taken each May by thousands of pilgrims who are following the trail of Sant‘ Efisio, a Roman soldier and Christian who was martyred in 303AD by the Emperor Diocletian. Along the way you enjoy a short panoramic drive through Cagliari and a brief stop at Monte Urpinu, where you enjoy good views over the city.
Nora was founded in the ninth century BC by Phoenician traders, and it had two harbors. The city enjoyed its greatest prosperity under the Romans but was abandoned around 800AD and has since become partially submerged by the sea. The ruins visible today are not as spectacular as some in mainland Italy, but are nonetheless very extensive. They include Carthaginian warehouses, Roman baths with mosaic floors, the remains of temples and a well-preserved theatre. After a walking tour of the excavations, you stop to view the small church that traditionally stands on the site of St. Efisio's martyrdom. From here, you reboard the coach for the return back to your yacht in port.
Notes: You will need to walk approx. 800 mt (approx .5 mile) over rough and uneven ground, comfortable shoes and sun protection are recommended. This land adventure is conducted entirely by foot, therefore we recommend wearing flat, comfortable shoes.
