Ronne Stroll
Ronne Stroll
Explore Rønne's rich history from Viking origins to WWII "bomb-houses" and 18th-century architecture. Visit Skt. Nikolaj Church, Store Torv, and Erichsens Gaard museum on a guided stroll through charming cobblestone streets.
The origins of the city of Rønne can be traced back to the Viking Age when people first settled around the natural harbor. However, it did not evolve into a proper town until the 1300’s when the town first gained market town rights from the crown. Your knowledgeable local guide will meet you at the pier and escort you into town where you will explore the secrets and charms of this quaint Baltic town.
The town boasts many exceptionally fine half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. In between them you will find the so-called “bomb-houses” – brick houses built to replace those that were bombed by the Russian Air Force in May 1945 after the Germans refused to surrender to the Red Army. To help the rebuilding of Rønne and other towns on the island, Sweden donated 300 wooden houses – most of which still are used today as homes.
Walk through the winding cobblestone streets with your knowledgeable local guide and enjoy the quaint and tranquil atmosphere of Rønne. Along the way you will pass the oldest church in town, the Skt. Nikolaj Church, and Store Torv, the central square – the former military parade grounds. See the oldest, still active, provincial theatre in Denmark from 1823 and many other notable landmarks. Your walk will also include a visit to Erichsens Gaard - a cultural-historical museum housed in one of the best kept commoners’ houses in Rønne from 1806. Step back in time as you stroll through the immaculately kept historical rooms and sprawling garden. Take a seat and enjoy a well-deserved refreshment, before continuing.
At the conclusion of the tour, you are free to return to your ship or remain downtown (time permitting) for further independent exploration.
