Jersey Wildlife & Scenic Drive
Jersey Wildlife & Scenic Drive
Enjoy a coastal exploration of this lovely island, pausing at the main sights, prior to arriving at Durrells Wildlife Park. Your journey will circuit the island in a clockwise direction, heading out West from St Helier. You will pass through the lovely fishing village of St. Aubin and take a little time to explore the Noirmont headland – home to a German bunker – where your guide will tell you more about the German Occupation of Jersey. From here also enjoy wonderful views to the south east coast and the beautiful Bay of Portelet. At St. Brelades and Corbiere you will pass other fortifications, and enjoy the wonderful coastal scenery along the first half of beautiful St. Ouens Bay before heading across the north of Jersey to arrive at The Durrell Wildlife Preservation Trust (Jersey Zoo) which visitors call the “zoo that’s not a zoo” – a crucial part of the effort to save wild animals from extinction. Here the conservation scientists work with the animals close up and learn what they need to maintain good health, breed, survive and thrive in their natural habitats. They can then share this vital information with their colleagues working with them in the wild. The Trust’s founder, Gerald Durrell, was not only a famous author and naturalist; he was also a pioneering “rebel who was right”. He firmly believed that zoos had a responsibility to save species from extinction. When he set out, most people didn’t believe that animals were disappearing from the planet, and even if they were, why should humans care? Over forty years on, Durrell Wildlife continues to be a pioneer for conservation and his work is admired and emulated around the world. Wherever possible the animals live in specially landscaped, spacious enclosures which closely resemble their natural homes – that way you can see them behaving just like they would in the wild. Continue your land adventure to the East coast and the picturesque village of, Gorey: home to Mont Orgeuil. This impressive fortification that has witnessed island life from the middle ages, through the French Wars, and right up to the German Occupation - View Mont Orgueil from a nearby vantage point before returning to St Helier and your yacht.
