A quintessential part of the Caribbean experience, Caribbean cocktails are perhaps as delicious as the islands’ offerings of sun, sea, and sand. The Caribbean has birthed at least a dozen classic cocktails, from the British Virgin Islands’ potent Painkiller to Puerto Rico’s creamy Pina Colada. That most are rum-based comes as little surprise, as the West Indies is where rum was first made, mentioned in records from Barbados as early as 1650.
The Painkiller
A sweet Caribbean libation with just the perfect hints of tropical fruit, the Painkiller was first created at Jost van Dyke’s Soggy Dollar Bar, nestled in the island’s paradisical White Bay. Try this cocktail whenever SeaDream drops anchor in this secluded British Virgin Islands locale—best enjoyed barefoot in the sand. Should you like to customize your own version at home, here are our bartenders’ favorite proportions:

Cubed ice
2 oz. rum
2 oz. pineapple juice
2 oz. cream of coconut
1 oz. orange juice
Dash of nutmeg
Pineapple wedge for garnish
Instructions:
Fill a glass with ice. Add all ingredients and briskly stir. Add a dash of nutmeg on top and garnish with a pineapple wedge. Dip your toes in the sand for full effect.
