  • Skagen - Skagen Stroll & Buried Church 109(USD)
    23 spaces remaining

    Description

Immerse yourself in the historic charm of Skagen's picturesque fishing village, on this private guided excursion tracing its roots back to the 13th century. Wander through the bustling harbor, admire the colorful wooden houses, and uncover the buried church of Saint Lawrence, a testament to the village's rich maritime history. Visit the small, picturesque fishing village of Skagen, Denmark's northernmost town. Its origins can be traced back to the 13th century. For hundreds of years, the fishing trade alone sustained this small community. With your guide, enjoy a stroll through the bustling fishing harbor. Admire the colorful wooden houses along the waterfront and see the rows of traditional fishing boats bobbing in the water. Continue your walk on a beautiful nature path to a true phenomenon created by nature – the buried church. The church, named after Saint Lawrence, the seafarers’ and Skagen’ s patron saint, was probably built in the second half of the 1300s and was at that time the largest church in the region. In the 1500s the sand drift period began, and the sand reached the church at the end of the 1700s. In the end, the congregation had to dig their way into the church. The struggle against the sand drift continued until 1795 when the church was closed by royal decree. Today, only the tower of the ancient church is visible.  After your visit to this rare sight, you will venture back towards the city and to the Coastal Museum, or Kystmuseet for a refreshing cup of coffee and Danish pastry. The venue for this refreshment stop is an open air museum, where some of the outside can be seen from the street. This open-air museum depicts the history of Skagen and has a replica of an old house. Enjoy a short break here before starting the return walk through the city back to Skagen Marina, brimming with boutique shops and quaint cafés and restaurants. Enjoy a photo stop before returning to your yacht.

    Description

Explore Rønne's rich history from Viking origins to WWII "bomb-houses" and 18th-century architecture. Visit Skt. Nikolaj Church, Store Torv, and Erichsens Gaard museum on a guided stroll through charming cobblestone streets. The origins of the city of Rønne can be traced back to the Viking Age when people first settled around the natural harbor. However, it did not evolve into a proper town until the 1300’s when the town first gained market town rights from the crown. Your knowledgeable local guide will meet you at the pier and escort you into town where you will explore the secrets and charms of this quaint Baltic town. The town boasts many exceptionally fine half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. In between them you will find the so-called “bomb-houses” – brick houses built to replace those that were bombed by the Russian Air Force in May 1945 after the Germans refused to surrender to the Red Army. To help the rebuilding of Rønne and other towns on the island, Sweden donated 300 wooden houses – most of which still are used today as homes. Walk through the winding cobblestone streets with your knowledgeable local guide and enjoy the quaint and tranquil atmosphere of Rønne. Along the way you will pass the oldest church in town, the Skt. Nikolaj Church, and Store Torv, the central square – the former military parade grounds. See the oldest, still active, provincial theatre in Denmark from 1823 and many other notable landmarks. Your walk will also include a visit to Erichsens Gaard - a cultural-historical museum housed in one of the best kept commoners’ houses in Rønne from 1806. Step back in time as you stroll through the immaculately kept historical rooms and sprawling garden. Take a seat and enjoy a well-deserved refreshment, before continuing. At the conclusion of the tour, you are free to return to your ship or remain downtown (time permitting) for further independent exploration.
